  入力したとおりに大文字・小文字を区別して
  <application>gedit</application>に検索させるか、大文字・小文字を区別
  せずに検索させるか、を指定できます。

という感じじゃないでしょうか。

  gedit は詳しくないのですが、
    指定された文法に従って解析し、ハイライトする
という機能でしたっけ。Emacs や IDE のエディタみたいに。

  シェル出力プラグインでは、あなたが使っているシェルと同じシェルを使い
  ます。<application>bash</application>をシェルにしているのなら、
  <application>gedit</application>は<application>bash</application>で
  コマンドを実行します。そして、通常はコンソールやターミナルに出力され
  るものと同じものが、編集中のテキストファイルの途中に挿入されます。
